Cass Turnbull

“Five Easy (really!) Plants to Prune”
Description: This slideshow covers basic cuts, basic plant habits, and what Cass Turnbull calls “the pruning budget.” Five plants which are relatively easy to prune are dealt with specifically: nandina, evergreen azalea, lilac, camellia, and Japanese upright maples. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn basic pruning from the Northwest expert!

Speaker background: Cass Turnbull left the Seattle Parks Department in 1986 after 11 years to start her own landscape maintenance and consulting business. Three years later, she founded PlantAmnesty, a private non-profit organization that now numbers over 900 members in 46 states and four countries. Turnbull is a Washington State Certified Landscaper, a Certified Arborist, and teaches horticulture at Washington State Vocational Schools. A veteran of the King County Master Gardener program, she also studied horticulture at the University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture and at Edmonds Community College. She is the author of Cass Turnbull’s Guide to Pruning – What, When, Where & How to Prune for a Beautiful Garden and The Complete Guide to Landscape Design, Renovation and Maintenance.

NOXIOUS WEEDS!!! YIPES!!!!

Giant Hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum, also giant cow parsley)

If you see this plant, avoid it! Contact with the plant can cause severe skin rashes, burning blisters and long-lasting scars. Giant hogweed makes an impressive appearance because of its height, and the size of the leaves and flower clusters. But it may spell trouble for people who are sensitive to the plant sap, a clear and watery fluid. The combination of sap on the skin and exposure to sunlight can produce painful, burning blisters within 24-48 hours. Contact with the plant sap can also result in purple or black scars.
